Having customers in more than 95 countries it can be challenging to ensure that we can provide a full service to our customers. This is where our expert team of distributors, partners and international engineers step in. Trained by our engineers in the complete installation, commissioning and maintenance of our machines to enable us to confidently support you no matter where you are. Having an on site training facility is great however sometimes we need to go our and deliver training directly. This was the case this September when one of our engineers headed out on a 30-hour journey to warmer climates, installing another of our machines in Latin America. To be precise in Iquique in Chile.

The GM350 Medical Waste incinerator has been installed in a new waste treatment plant that will be managing the medical waste for Hospitals and Clinics in the region. The first of many installations planned by our customer Geconor to help manage the clinical waste in the region.

Following the installation and training we were able to ask General Manager Jorge Rivera Stuardo a few questions about his plans.

What do you see as the future for waste incineration in South America?

“For us our immediate goal is to become one of the main providers of hazardous waste disposal in the North. We chose to work with Addfield as they are such an established company that has specific solutions not only for medical waste but also for pet cremation and general municipal waste, all of which are areas we are planning to expand into.

We have big plans to continue to grow, expanding into the Central and Southern regions as well, through installing more incineration plants. We are also planning on developing our waste to energy capabilities with Addfield as we know that there machines are already able to use the heat to generate clean energy, which we call circular energy. We like the way that Addfield are simply built better and this makes a great strategic alliance for us at Geconor as the right way to eliminate waste while helping our environment.”

What helped you decide to start Geconor?

“To begin with the company was involved in just transporting hazardous waste. Then we realised that there was a different way to deal with what we were handling. After this we decided to really research the idea and developed it to where we are now creating a company that also receives and treats waste. We met with investors and began our long journey to form what is now called Ecological Waste Management North “Geconor” where we are aiming to give a real, concrete solution to the problem that is so widespread here in the northern parts of our country.”

Why did they choose to work with Addfield?

“We wanted to work with a company that we could trust and as Addfield comply with all of the rules of the EU we believe that this surpasses our national legislation and that gives us the security that they would deliver machines that would be able to operate reliably under the legal framework governing this activity. After much research and many discussions we decided that we had found the right supplier and wanted to become representatives of Addfield here in Chile, they are a prestigious company and there slogan says it all, ‘Simply Built Better’.” Jorge Rivera Stuardo, General Manager, Geconor.

We are proud to have Geconor as our latest distributor representing our Medical Incineration and Pet Cremation ranges throughout Chile.

It’s a fantastic honour to have been asked to provide a solution to The Ascension Islands. A beautiful location just south of the equator. An incredibly remote location, with a population of approximately 800 people including a US Airforce base housing 200 residents. Being surrounded by so much ocean and with a limited amount of land means that solid waste is a serious issue that needs to be addressed to prevent damaging the environment on and off the island.

We already have a lot of previous experience in providing waste incineration solutions for several island locations. Making us perfectly suited to deliver the right solution for their mix of waste produced. Even with a relatively manageable population manmade waste has to be disposed of carefully to prevent potentially hazardous contamination. An installation such as this needs a machine that is specially optimised to handle the full mix of the waste generated on the island.

Our solution is one of our high capacity incinerators the G250. Built inside two 40ft containers, this self-contained machine minimises the civil work required on site for installation. For a project this remote it greatly reduces the challenges of installation, handling and logistics. The G250 has automatic loading and a stepped hearth to allow safe continuous loading throughout the incineration process. Capable of processing 250kg of waste every hour. The G250 is able to ensure a clean incineration of mixed waste types through its large cylindrical secondary chamber with a two-second retention to ensure that only clean flue gas is returned to the environment. It has been built to effectively process all waste that the Islanders will put into it, including medical waste alongside organic, general municipal waste.

Accessing such a remote location is a challenge in itself. Nestled in the middle of the South Atlantic and surrounded by the greatest concentration of Great White sharks anywhere in the world. The quickest way to access the island is by plane. Although we will be shipping the machine by boat our engineers will be flying out which is not as simple as you may imagine as recently the weekly flights have been reduced to every three weeks, which means our engineers will be having an extended visit whilst installing and commissioning the machine.

Reliability is essential in such a remote location which is why our machine was such a perfect match, our brick lined refractory, delivers incredible insulation, it also ensures that any damage from loading and sustained usage can easily be rectified compared to a completely concrete cast refractory. Any problems in the future with a brick refractory can be managed in a matter of days whereas a fault in a concrete cast refractory could put such a large machine in such a remote location out of action for months if not longer. Our engineers will be taking advantage of the extended installation time by fully training the locals in operating and maintaining such an impressive machine.

This has been a fantastic journey for all of us here working closely with the Government of the Ascension Islands through regular teleconferencing as well as their QA inspectors to ensure that with the help of our machine the islands are able to continue to be a natural haven undamaged by unwanted pollution.

Currently in production in our factory and a couple of months to go before delivery and commissioning we will keep you posted on how the machine is developing.

At Addfield we are proud of the fact that we produce some of the world’s most advanced solutions to Medical Waste Treatment. Our MP range is currently changing the way that medical and clinical waste is being disposed of in many developing countries. This range is trusted by world aid agencies and governments globally and here is a breakdown of why it is so popular.

The Addfield MP500 Medical waste incinerator equipped with a Venturi Flue Gas scrubber, automated Bin tipper and waste charging system, is the complete medical waste disposal solution. Part of the Medical range of incinerators designed to safely destroy all harmful medical waste leaving minimal sterile ash.

The optional bin tipper is compatible with most 80 and 120 litre bins. Allowing the decanting of waste directly into the ram charger without requiring any human contact, reducing risks of contamination and injury from sharps and other potential hazards. The bin tipper can be used to load the ram charger throughout the incineration cycle, allowing waste to be loaded as it arrives. Once loaded it has an automatic safety system preventing excess loading, ensuring thorough destruction of waste.

Once loaded the lid is closed with our ergonomically designed handles optimised to reduce physical stress from operation as well as to extend the working life of the machine. Connected directly into the incinerator, the charger benefits from a large reception hopper able to house a full load of medical waste. Once at temperature a single press is all that is required to charge waste into position. The pusher plate moves the waste into the Primary chamber before retracting to allow the door to close and the combustion to begin.

The entire system is centrally controlled via a touch screen interface and control panel, providing access to all essential information throughout the combustion process including:

Burn Settings

Burn Time

Temperature settings

Navigation

Chamber temperature

Time remaining

and more.

The control panel is intuitive to operate with fully automatic programmed settings. The panel also controls the ram loader and incinerator doors.

Once the program has begun it will operate in stages, starting with the preheat cycle which heats the secondary chamber up to operational temperature of 1100° centigrade. Once this has been achieved the primary chamber is ready to be loaded and the full burn cycle can begin.

The incinerator benefits from utilising a hot hearth principle of combustion, the floor of the primary chamber is heated from underneath. This combustion approach effectively eliminates any cold spots below your waste. By recycling heat from the primary chamber and forcing the heat under the floor, this system also helps to reduce your fuel consumption as well as burn time.

An advanced multi layered interlocking brickwork refractory delivers unrivalled efficiency keeping heat inside the chamber drastically reducing the cost of operation by up to 40%. The secondary chamber maintains its temperature consistently through Hysteresis. This ensures that at no point during operation will the chamber temperature be lower than legislative requirements.

While wearing appropriate protective equipment, deashing can be achieved through the side door. We recommend at least every two hours to ensure effective destruction. You are also able to agitate bulky waste with the deashing rake for smoother burning. The Deashing door comes with a viewing window to allow you to see what stage the incineration is at without requiring you to open the door. On average you can expect to be left with 3-5% of ash from medical waste.

The Venturi flue gas scrubber cleans the air throughout the incineration process. Comprising of several engineered sections forming a highly efficient system for neutralising and filtering exhaust gases. Ducted from the secondary chamber and directed via the hot gas duct straight into the Venturi reactor unit. These gasses are then forced to move at an extremely high velocity which shears the cleaning solution from the walls producing an enormous number of micro droplets. Particle and Gas removal then occurs in the Converging section as the gas mixes with the droplets before exiting through the diverging section where it begins to slow.

The collected particulates and gaseous pollutants are then collected at the base of the Venturi in the settling tank. During the process neutralising sorbent agents are introduced into the gasses to remove acidity. We recommend a solution of 70% Water to 30% Sodium, which is also available as a pellet format that can be managed, manually as a solid or automatically through the supplied liquid dosing tank which is attached to the Venturi tank.

A mesh trap filtration system is in place in the main Venturi water tank, to recover any waste and dust from the water. We recommend a visual inspection of the trap to take place daily and twice a day under times of heavy usage. The PH levels need to be as close to pH neutral as possible and checked daily.

The system is available as an oil, LPG or natural gas, powered machine. Where fuel stability is a problem we offer a dual fuel option as well.

Designed to be easily transported and installed the entire system can be delivered in one 40 ft container. With all parts benefiting from lifting points to protect the cladding and outer shell of the machine. With an outer shell manufactured from robust 10mm British Steel producing a reliable machine that will be able to stand the test of time in any environment.

The entire system has been produced with safety at the forefront. With various safety interlocks in place to protect the operator, the machine and the environment.

This includes:

Limit switches on all doors which turn off all burners whenever opened.

Aluminium over-cladding to insulate hot surfaces on the Venturi.

A series of energised Blimo motors set in the closed position unless there is a power cut at which point it will spring open preventing the system from overheating.

Addfield are the number one choice for medical incineration equipment delivering high quality machinery for more than 35 years across more than 95 countries.

Within recent years we have seen our international reputation grow, as we work with increasing numbers of world aid agencies alongside governments in providing long-term solutions to treating the growing problem of increasing levels of Medical Waste.

In the final months of 2017, we were awarded our largest international contract to date to provide 13 MP500 (Medical/Pathological) medical waste incinerators complete with Venturi flue gas scrubbers and automatic loading systems.

With the first batch of machines already on the way to Pakistan, in March we were proud to welcome representatives from the Government of the Punjab alongside our distributor for Pakistan to visit our factory. Able to see a number of their machines being completed as well as receiving hands-on training in the installation, commissioning and servicing of their machines ready for delivery.

We were able to spend a few minutes interviewing their Chief Technical Officer, Muhammad Junaid Rashid who is a part of the Biomedical Equipment Resource Centre (BERC) in the Primary and Secondary Healthcare Department at the Government of the Punjab, Pakistan.

Following training we were proud to issue all our visitors from Pakistan with their certificates.

“I am based in Lahore in Pakistan and my department oversees healthcare, specifically relating to biomedical equipment management for the corrective & predictive maintenance, and more technical activities like inspections due to having a more technical side being an engineer.

This has been the first time that I have visited Addfield, this visit was to prepare for the pre-shipment of the incinerators as well as technical training to learn how to operate and maintain the equipment.

Addfield is one of a good company managed properly by employing international standards. They are taking care of all these things. The manufacturing is very good and the people are all very supportive and friendly. I have found everything to be fine here.

In Pakistan, we have faced problems while dealing with infectious waste of hospitals. There was no proper mechanism for ensuring the proper disposal of such infectious waste. Our Punjab Government has taken the initiative for implementing the hospital waste management system and taken many steps in this regard, as it is contaminating our environment. We have made a foolproof system for effective implementation of hospital waste management. We planned to install one incinerator in each of our districts. We collect the waste in refrigerated trucks and incinerate at incinerator site. We are getting thirteen machines from Addfield that will be installed across different locations throughout our thirty-six districts of the Punjab province.

We published a tender for these thirteen incinerators; eleven companies participated and Addfield won this on both technical and commercial basis. This is the main reason behind choosing to have this particular product in our country.

We found Addfield when we began the process of prequalification and started to review the vendors, manufacturers, and products as well. We went through the main tender process with Vertex their distributor for Pakistan who is representing Addfield. They were the main introduction for us, during the tender process and introduced the Addfield solution to us and ultimately, they won the tender and the equipment is now being supplied to our country.

For treating our medical infectious waste, the Health Department decided that incineration would be the main solution for treating hospital waste in our environment. Incineration is a better approach and technology to get rid of these types of waste, especially hospital waste. Earlier it was just dumped somewhere or handed over to a third party. In the future, we are looking to increase our number of machines, as well as looking at other options as recommended by Addfield. We are looking at heat exchangers and introducing a turbine to create energy from the waste we burn, as heat is very good at being used for electricity conversion.

We all found the staff at Addfield to be very friendly and they were very honest, not avoiding answering any questions, even questions that they may not like. They would always answer each and every question. The working environment is very good and the people here are very fascinating and the interaction is very good and informative. They are also traveling Pakistan without any fear as they know that Pakistan is safe country and the international media is not giving the true picture of Pakistan.

Addfield has all the capabilities related to this project and they do have the knowledge and can manage the standards as well. Visiting the factory has helped us to see the machines in production and we now have a number of things that we would like to see changed and added to. I was able to discuss with the technical staff and have given them, as a customer what I foresee should be considered in the machines and what will be the added advantage for the customer as well as for Addfield. They have accepted my comments and said they will be considering these in the future as well.

On the whole, as I have already said everything has gone fine and everything in this particular visit with Addfield doing whatever they are doing it is good, we feel proud that we have selected a good and honest company for this Hospital Waste Treatment Project.” Muhammad Junaid Rashid

As with all of our visitors it was a pleasure to welcome them to our premises and look forward to meeting up with them again once all of our machines have been commissioned.

As the global leaders in medical waste incineration, we are committed to expanding the countries and organisations that we work with. Today is the first day of Arab Health one of the worlds biggest Health Care exhibitions that is held in Dubai annually. Continuing our planned international growth, a number of our top incineration experts are over in Dubai representing us in the global marketplace. We’ve already seen the number of countries that we serve increase steadily during the past twelve months and we have recently broken the 100 countries mark, it’s exhibitions like this that give us the edge on the global market.

As we reach the halfway point of the first day we have already welcomed visitors new and old to our stand, which we are manning alongside Jinto Kuruvilla from Lillidale one of our international distributors.

Having taken a quick walk around the show we’ve seen some of the big names in the medical world exhibiting alongside us including Medilink, Bioquell, Life Sciences Wales, and the Harley Street Medical Group.

While we may not always be able to bring full-size incinerators to shows like these, this year we are introducing our VR experience and giving attendees the opportunity to have a look around one of our larger Medical Waste facilities that we are currently working on. If last year is anything to go by we know we are going to have a very busy and successful few days.

In addition to Arab Health we are already in the process of arranging more upcoming shows for the year ahead, this time, however, a little closer to home in. In May we will be at the Pig and Poultry show in Warwickshire as well as AquacultureUK at Aviemore in Scotland. Both shows highlight different aspects of our machines with Pig and Poultry showcasing our Agricultural range and AquacultureUK highlighting our Aqualcultural incinerators. Of course, we will have more shows on the horizon for later in the year and in addition to the ones we attend in person we also have an increasing number lined up with our distributors that we will share with you whenever we can through our social media.

If you are unable to make it to any of our shows and want to learn more about why our machines are the number one choice in quality waste management solutions get in touch with us and we can guide you to the right machine for you.

We have built our business as the experts in Incineration for more than 35 years, steadily growing our range and our reach. Able to create the right machine for every requirement and that commitment has paid off allowing us to grow year upon year. In the past couple of months, we have welcomed some of our largest contracts to date from multiple machine orders to one of the largest manufacturing projects in our history. We put equal effort into every machine and continue to innovate and lead in the field of incineration.

As proud as we are of our UK customers we also value our International customers equally and see no end in sight for expanding our global reach into one day having an Addfield Incinerator in every country on the planet. This year already we have continued our ongoing growth with another number of orders and installations coming in from countries for the very first time with 6 new countries making the sensible choice in the past month alone. With machines ordered for Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Burundi, and Iraq. We are already installing machines on fresh ground with the first commission in Conakry the capital of Guinea, West Africa this week with one of our MP200 Medical Waste incinerators in a specially optimised container.

This project was designed for speed and ease of installation with the MP200 installed within a container alongside the fuel tank and all required components. Able to literally be placed in position and be ready to use. Without needing additional foundations and on-site building works the containerised solution is perfect for a rapid access installation.

The containerised MP200 is able to be rapidly deployed and commissioned in almost any environment.

Fully protected from the elements and able to be commissioned in virtually any location, we are often asked to provide our incinerators in such containers as it provides a very high quality all in one solution that can become mobile if required to follow demand or can simply become permanently installed in one location.

This is the first machine that we have installed in Guinea and we were able to call on Abraham Bah who is one of our UK representatives alongside Emmanuel Ehikhumen who regularly supports our installs across Africa to ensure that the project was able to run smoothly. Providing full commissioning alongside training to ensure that the machine is able to be used safely and correctly from day one.

With more countries coming aboard every week it really is proving that our expertise in exporting and supporting machines globally is recognised.

There is nothing more satisfying than when you can really see the impact that one of our machines can have on a community. This June/July our team travelled more than 4000km across the entire country of Senegal installing and commissioning 14 MP100 Medical Waste Incinerators.

Leading the project was Abraham Bah from our UK head office and supported by Emmanuel Ehikhumen our engineer based in Nigeria. Supported by two teams from Togo and Senegal together we travelled the country and trained local engineers to maintain and support the equipment once we all left.

Emmanuel Ehikhumen training up a team in how to maintain the incinerators.

The expedition began on the 26th June and included installs at Mbour, Fatick, Louga, Touba, Dagana, Diourbel, Wandefa, Dioulacolon, Zinguinchor, Koutal, Kaffrine, Tambacounda, Kedougou with the final site Ouro Sogui being completed on the 16th July two days ahead of schedule.

The machines were selected by a major global Health Organisation to improve the environment and opportunities across Senegal through safe and effective treatment of Medical and Pharmaceutical waste.

“The experience was very satisfying, building up and training a local team of technicians to continue to support the operation and maintenance of the machines directly in country. It worked really well, we all learned a lot from it and really practised the essential team spirit to keep really motivated to succeed despite facing daily challenges, sites not being 100% ready, logistics not available, misplaced parts and the weather. I would like to say well done to everyone who helped us.” Abraham Bah

“This is the type of project that we really appreciate here. Beyond the initial order of 14 machines what really makes a difference here is the long-term impact that appropriate medical waste treatment can have on a community. Ensuring safe destruction of potentially very hazardous waste is often taken for granted but it should not be underestimated it does save lives. We are really proud of the way this entire operation was managed and are gearing up again ready for our next big expedition.” James Grant

The medical waste had previously been disposed of in-hospital courtyards, open fires, fire pits and other unsanitary ways. Without the option of safe incineration, it was simply impossible to manage. All of this waste causing extremely high risks of injury and infection. The difference that the addition of these incinerators will make to the community is immeasurable.

An example of how waste was previously discarded.

Medical waste in developing countries has been a recognised problem from the United Nations in the past few years with needle stick injuries commonly exposing staff and members of the public to increase risk of Hepatitis B and C as well as HIV. With the risks of open-air incineration resulting in the Incomplete destruction of waste and dangerously high dioxin emissions and unsafe disposal of ashes.

We are already in talks about what the future will bring across West Africa and look forward to working with our team again.

The final remains from a successful incineration of medical waste.

Worldwide medical waste incinerators are making a huge difference to waste control, many clinics and hospitals, that just a few years ago, either buried or burned their medical waste are now utilising the benefits of incinerators to help them take the next step toward better health. Even generating heat and hot water and in some larger cases, electricity generation is available.

“Incinerators provide an interim solution especially for developing countries…,” says WHO, adding that best practice must be used to ensure the optimal operation of the of the incinerator system.

Other locations that are benefiting from medical waste incinerators include New Zealand, Australia, and Southeast Asia. Because modern incinerators are custom engineered, they can burn a variety of different fuels, are easy to operate, and can be cleaned and maintained by a person with little prior operational experience.

Click here to view our full range of medical incinerators.

The WHO suggests the most important step for a medical clinic or hospital interested in using an incinerator is to work with a reputable company that will configure an incinerator that meets their requirements.

They should be able to conform to any country’s laws by equipping the unit with regulators that monitor the unit’s performance. They should also be willing to offer guidance in the proper care for the units that they sell.

This is where Addfield Environmental Systems come in.

The Addfield Medical MP and GM Range of Waste incinerators are utilised worldwide on six different continents by private hospitals, government primary health care services, medical waste management companies and by the vast majority of the world’s largest aid agencies globally.

Contrary to popular belief, only about 10% of all general medical waste is incinerated. Incineration is the only approved disposal method for yellow bag waste under UN law. This includes all infectious waste, such as chemically contaminated samples, infectious waste contaminated with medicines or chemicals and laboratory specimens. This is because it is the safest and most effective way of reducing the infectivity of the waste to prevent any further harm. Alternative disposal methods are incapable of fully destroying contaminated waste from pharmaceuticals and specific pathological waste.

The regulation of incinerating medical waste is becoming very strict, with clear guidelines set out for those involved in the process. Anyone handling this waste must be registered and final air emission standards are closely monitored.

The need for incineration is due to the advanced medical system and it is a rapidly expanding disposal method in developing countries. The Stockholm convention dictates that it is obligatory for countries to use the best waste disposal method available to them whilst promoting the best available methods to others.

It is often found that incinerators in developing countries are not to the same standard as those in developed countries which results in high emissions and contaminated waste water. Addfield are one of the few manufacturers that can confidently say our high standard is continued throughout our product lines to ensure that ALL customers receive the very best incinerators on the market.

Addfield have recently had an order for 6 MP-100s and 3 MP-200s with scrubber systems that are going to a developing country to help control their general medical waste. The very poor waste management systems in these countries mean that people are directly having contact with the infectious waste through rag picking, animals are eating from these sites which affect their by-products and the emissions from the waste cause everyone in the surrounding areas to breathe in harmful fumes. More information about this can be found here: http://www.dawn.com/news/42774/islamabad-improper-disposal-of-hospital-waste-lead-to-fatal-diseases-expert A clean living environment with access to acceptable food and healthcare should be a basic human right, so we at Addfield are ensuring we can be part of this process where possible.
