Exhibitions are a vital part of our activities at Addfield giving us the chance to catch up with our current customers as well as spending time with future customers face to face. Often our sales team have to fly to the other side of the world to attend a show, however, this month we are happily exhibiting a little closer to home in Warwickshire and Scotland.

As final preparations are well underway here as we prepare for the return of the Pig and Poultry show next week in Warwickshire as well as the Aquaculture show in Aviemore.

Having started in the agricultural field over 35 years ago, it is still one we work very hard to continue to support. A fantastic show which we are going to be taking two of our most popular agricultural incinerators the Mini PLUS and the SB. Both perfect additions to any pig or poultry farm as one of the most reliable ways to safely dispose of fallen livestock.

Biosecurity is not only an issue for agricultural farmers, fish farms also need to securely dispose of their solid waste and our Aqua range have been specially designed for such challenges, as such we are going to be showcasing the benefits of our high moisture content incinerators at the Aquacuture UK show.

With both Agricultural and Aquacultural industries going through continual change adapting to the threats from Avian Flu, African Swine Fever and Sea lice respectively as well as many other diseases that can affect livestock and livelihood. It’s never too soon to take charge and be Biosecure whilst increasing your efficiency through buying an incinerator.

If you are planning on attending either Show or Aquaculture UK makes sure to come and find us at stand 146 at the Pig and Poultry show and stand 311 at Aquaculture UK.

When you think about the beautiful Island of Sark nestled in between Jersey and Guernsey the last thing that will probably come into your mind is pollution. Being the smallest of the Channel Islands with a permanent population of approximately 600 and an active tourist industry may not be the first place you think of when you think about Incineration. But with the BBC show, The Blue Planet highlighting the dangers caused to our ocean caused by plastic waste, every step that can be taken to prevent waste ending up in the sea is one taken in the right direction.

This is especially the case for remote locations. You still need a safe and sustainable way to manage the waste that is created on a daily basis. Where a landfill site is not possible taking up valuable space and impacting the local environment the only previous safe alternative is to ship their waste to neighbouring islands.

This is where the real value of localised incineration comes in being able to manage the island waste on-site reduces any environmental impact created from unnecessary transportation, reduces the risk of dumping in the sea and gives full control for the islanders in destroying their waste.

The machine for Sark Island has been optimised to be able to manage a greater range of traditional waste through increasing the burn rate in the secondary chamber. The result is the same clean destruction of waste being able to adapt to demands able to increase and decrease its usage following busy seasons. This gives the islanders an easy way to keep waste to a minimum and the surrounding seas clean. With the only by-product from incineration being sterilised ash and warm air, keeping the sea life safe from plastic and other waste.

At Addfield we have been designing and manufacturing our machines specifically to be the safest option for you and the environment for over 35 years. This has given us the expertise and knowledge to be able to optimise all equipment to match all requirements exactly.

No matter how big or small our installations we know that they consistently improve the local environment they are placed in helping to reduce the impact of waste.

While salmon is now an affordable staple in most supermarkets it wasn’t that long ago that fresh salmon was reserved for special occasions and celebrations. With the growth of salmon farming, it is now available everywhere at very reasonable prices. As the financial cost has dropped over the years the environmental cost is now becoming of great concern.

Salmon has come down in price due to changes in the way it is farmed. Housed in Fish Farms and intensely reared in cages, but what impact does this have on the wild fish stock in the area? The answer it appears can be catastrophic, with more than 250 Salmon farms off the western coast of Scotland the impact is now becoming visible. With cages being stationed near the shore or within estuaries, often in the path of traditional wild salmon breeding grounds. This is causing a drastic reduction in wild salmon returning to spawn. The impact has been recently highlighted in the Financial Times by respected Journalist and Presenter Jeremy Paxman (see link below).

What is causing the damage?

The harm is not from the cages themselves but from the ‘Sea Lice’ that leech onto and feed on the captive salmon.

With the infected salmon creating a cloud of sea lice in and around their cages. The wild salmon and even trout swimming through the cloud are becoming infested by the lice in quantities greater than normal. The lice feed on the scales of the fish, with large numbers of lice causing visible damage including scarring, loss of fins leading to secondary infections and death.

With research from the leading fisheries charity S&TC UK indicating that out of the 250 salmon farms in Scotland as many as 120 farms are responsible for sea lice in levels exceeding the recommended thresholds.

One approach to combat this is the addition of chemicals into the water, however being open water, these chemicals can cause greater harm to the overall environment. Another approach and a costlier one is to change the pattern of production reducing the number of fish in each cage and allowing breaks between pen usage. There is also the option to introduce Wrasse and Lumpfish both of which feed on the lice. However, each of these could have a noticeable impact on the price of fish in stores.

Is Marine incineration the Solution?

A sustainable and thorough approach will be to ensure regular cleaning and monitoring practices are carried out followed by regular disposal of infected stock and the resultant waste that is removed from the water, with incineration a central part of the process to ensure that the ‘Lice’ which are the cause of the problems are safely eliminated.

At Addfield we have developed a range of specialised aquaculture incinerators, which are able to completely destroy any harmful biological waste removing the risks from the environment.

As with all different kinds of waste, Aquaculture needs machines designed specifically for processing high moisture waste in ways not possible with a standard incinerator. With purpose built channels to direct any liquids, with angled walls to ensure a clean continuous burn rate and other features making them the machines of choice for serious marine operations. More importantly, the wrong machine will simply use more fuel and create waste that has not been fully processed which will not provide the biosecurity solution delivered from a purpose-built marine incinerator.

The Future of Fish Farming

It’s difficult to fully predict how the future of fish farming will play out, without careful planning in how to treat the growing threat to wild marine animals it may not be long before legislation comes in and changes the way fish are farmed. With the potential to move from the sea to the shore with fish farms able to be established inland closer to transport links and able to be more carefully filtered and monitored to prevent lice outbreaks and other environmentally damaging by-products.

The microscopic fish louse could cause enormous disturbances in how fish are farmed in the future. We know that incineration could help keep fish farms producing safely for years to come. Businesses must act now to prevent any further damage, which will impact the future of farming taking a conscious effort to isolate the problem early to save the viability of off shore fish farming.

No matter where the future of leads our machines will be there. Designed for every situation Addfield build incinerators to keep on working no matter the environment. With a strengthened, steel construction and impact resistant loading, you’re guaranteed a quality installation on land and sea. With custom features to allow installation on barges and boats. The Marine range of Incinerators are already helping to protect the environment at large.

A huge question of today, in the fish farming industry, is whether farming salmon is having a negative impact on the environment and if so, what can be the solution?

What are lice?

A parasite, which lives by attaching itself to a fish and eating its blood and skin

Salmon farming at a cost?

Lice in salmon farming are costing the industry in excess of £1 billion globally with £300 million spent within Scotland alone on chemicals. With the lice becoming more immune to the chemicals we are pouring into the lochs and seas. A report into the lochs in Scotland has shown an increase in levels breaching the environmental limits resulting in toxic waters.

What is the answer? Move the farming to colder deeper waters and manage the waste at source. The Addfield Thunder incinerator is a compactly designed incinerator designed for the harsh environmental climates the seas have to offer, with throwing the problem of waste back into the sea you are raising the risk for more bio security issues. Manage the waste with the trusted Addfield Thunder incinerator, specifically designed for the aquaculture industry.

Click here to read our Thunder incinerator case study!
